There is an amazing array of “miniature sprinkler” parts, or dripper sprinkler parts.  You can get dripper sprinkler parts and accessories to handle whatever watering needs you may have.  A sprinkler professional can install it for you, or you can go to the local garden supply store and ask for help.  They are usually a great source of information, plus they should have everything you need.

When using a wood planter, it’s best to put a waterproof liner in it to protect and extend the life of the wood.  If you are using boxes made from plastic, concrete, or other durable material, they are not susceptible to rot and the potting soil can be placed directly into them.  If you use concrete planters, paint the inside with a waterproof coating before putting any potting soil in them.  Outdoor planters will need drainage holes in the bottom of each container, along with some rocks or gravel in the bottom. You might also paint or coat the outside of wooden planters and pots every year or two with a good outdoor paint or varnish to protect them from the elements.
